why did traditional still life artists paint in realistic representational manner?

well there could be a few reasons for that. most paintings were portraits for royalty and the wealthy, the artists were commissioned to paint them for decorative and historical reasons. Also the camera was not invented so a life like representation of something was considered ‘art’ and that was the only way to capture real life. With the invention of the camera, the modernist era was born, with expressionism, impressionism and the likes. Art needed to go to new levels, to change in order to give more than the camera could. hope that helps.
